Last week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Released Drone Registration Location Data. Anyone who owns a drone weighing more than 0.55 lbs. but less than 55 lbs. must register before flying the aircraft outdoors for hobby or recreation. The new unmanned aircraft registration system began operating on December 21, 2015. The FAA database shows the city, state and zip code of each registered drone owner.

Based upon a review of that data, Over Austin has learned:

There are 36,704 registered drone owners in Texas

There are 2,064 registered drone owners in Austin
There are 329 registered drone owners in Round Rock
There are 217 registered drone owners in Cedar Park
There are 179 registered drone owners in Pflugerville
There are 63 registered drone owners in Buda

There are 3053 registered drone owners in Houston
There are 1337 registered drone owners in Dallas

Austin Drone Pilots, a local drone flying group founded by Over Austin founder Christopher Sherman in Dec 2014, now has 510 members, mostly from the greater Austin area. The goal of Austin Drone Pilots is to share best flight practices, rules and safety practices. Chris also maintains a drone rules and regs web site for Austin pilots here: http://overaustin.com/dronerules/

Over Austin maintains 30,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The FAA is not posting the names and street addresses of registered owners because the data is exempt from disclosure under a FOIA exemption that protects information in agency files from a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.

The FAA based its determination to post only city, state and zip code on several factors, including, in part, that many of the registrants are minors and only hobbyists or recreational users.  The location information was released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
